Small business tips for saving money on their monthly phone bill.

Save Money on Your Monthly Phone Bill

If it looks too good to be true and sounds too good to be true, it’s probably too good to be true. In most cases, anyway…

How We Save Over $1000 a Year on Our Phone Service

When my sister, who is ten years older and a lot wiser than me (and much less gullible than I am, haa) told me about the phone plan she uses that only costs $20/month, I initially gave her a side eye. I was very skeptical, to say the least. Thomas and I were spending close to $200 each month on our phone bill, so if this craziness panned out to be true, it would result in pretty dramatic savings for the two of us.

I used to think of our phone bill as just another tax write-off. It didn’t make much of a difference whether or not we spent $20 or $200 each month, because a good portion of this expense would be deducted from our taxes each year, or so I thought. In reality, since neither of us has a phone designated solely for business purposes, we’re only allowed to deduct a percentage of our total phone bill on our taxes. This, of course, leaves us footing a good chunk of the phone bill each month. A few dollars might not make a big difference in your budget, but an extra thousand dollars a year can go a long way.

After doing our research, we were pretty confident that this phone service was legitimate. After all, the company behind it is this little startup known as GOOGLE. Yep, that’s right. As much as we like to shop locally, we’re not trying to sell you on some mom and pop phone company. This service I’m talking about is generated by your most trusted search engine.

The one catch we found was that we’d have to buy a new phone specific to this service, but we both had old phones that were in need of updating. Since we signed up for this plan, these terms have actually changed, and you can bring your own iPhone or Android from their list of compatible devices to Google Fi while still taking advantage of their cost-effective services. It’s a win-win!

It’s been over a year and a half since we made the switch over to Google Fi, and we couldn’t have more good things to say about it. I tell pretty much everyone I know about our phone plans, because hey - why not pocket a little extra cash to spend on a vacation or something super fun instead of spending it on your phone bill? Unless your phone service is mowing your lawn or giving you a back massage each night (maybe you could set your phone to ‘vibrate??’), you’re basically paying 2-3 times the cost of what you could be paying for the same exact services. That’s plain silly.

We pay $20/month plus $10 per gig of data when we’re not connected to wi-fi. Since we both work from home, we’re connected to wi-fi throughout the majority of the day but still manage to use anywhere from 3 to about 6 gigs of data per month (dang it, YouTube…). If you share a plan with your spouse or other member of your household, the second plan goes down to $15/month plus data.

Here’s a screenshot that shows our monthly phone bills since switching over to Google Fi:

Since we had to get new phones at the time we signed up, we opted to pay $10/month for each of our phones instead of paying the full amount up front. They don’t charge any interest for paying for the devices monthly, so it really doesn’t make a difference whether you buy the phones outright or roll the expense into your monthly bill. Because of this, our bill is actually $20 higher than what it would be without the cost of the actual phones. If you’re trying to build up your credit, this is a great way to do it. If you bring an existing phone over to this service, your bill would probably be less than what ours show (unless you just use tons and tons of data).
